Streetwise - Making a difference in SA Schools
This case study presents the initial findings from two school deployments of Streetwise, a groundbreaking product designed to provide access to information for South African schools, anywhere within cellphone network coverage.

Streetwise offers the opportunity to bring South Africa's schools and other educational institutions into the digital information age, supporting teachers as well as learners with a wide range of resources and tools. Psitek recognizes that educators need tools which facilitate learning outcomes, not intrusive technology for technology's sake. Streetwise has been designed with this in mind.
Streetwise is essentially a GPRS e-mail and information terminal, designed to interact with lean, GPRS based content and services, which are provided by a dedicated Streetwise content backend. Some of its key attributes are as follows:
- Cost-effective: Allows access to information and powerful services in a barebones format, without unnecessary features and complications
- GPRS based: Works anywhere within normal cell phone coverage, using a standard SIM card. Lean content means that bandwidth consumption is low
- Rugged and reliable: Includes many hardware features learned from Psitek's experience as an emerging markets pioneer. The product is also virus proof
- Easy to use: Streetwise's simple user interface makes it as easy to use as a cell phone
- Secure: Streetwise has a low theft risk as it can be physically bolted down. In the unlikely event that a terminal is stolen, it can be disabled remotely.
