Who we are
Psitek develops solutions using cellular and wireless technology to provide access to voice, data and information services to people in under-serviced areas of the world. In so doing it creates micro-enterprise business opportunities in these regions. Psitek operates in 30 countries across Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Since its inception in 1990, Psitek has prided itself in its ability to solve problems in an appropriate and meaningful way. It has evolved from humble beginnings as a small product development organisation to an established, service-driven, customer-focused company with three significant business units.
These units are:
- Access to Voice which provides voice-based communication solutions that are convenient, reliable and affordable
- Access to Services which offers GPRS-based end-to-end solutions that deliver electronic prepaid and pay-as-you-go services to a point of sale terminal
- Access to Information which provides a GPRS e-mail and information solution that delivers GPRS-friendly information, search and e-mail services to a terminal and by doing so, appropriate and affordable connectivity to users in areas where conventional IT solutions fail.
Psitek holding company and core development centre is based in Tyger Valley, Cape Town, while its manufacturing facility, ELPROM Electronic Manufacturers (Pty) Ltd, is situated in Somerset-West. Its main distribution channel for Southern Africa, Psitek South Africa (Pty) Ltd, is based in Midrand, Gauteng.
Today the Psitek group of companies is active in throughout Africa, the Middle East and South America, It is also represented in Colombia and Turkey in the form of joint ventures, Psitek Andina and Content Ready Company, Turkey, respectively.
VenFin, a division of the Rembrandt Group, has been a shareholder of Psitek since 1999. In July 2007, Psitek South Africa (Pty) Ltd entered into an empowerment deal with Regiments Capital. The Psitek group of companies now employs more than 400 people.
